Food & Fruit
From herb-forward Northern Thai cooking to a year-round rotation of tropical fruit, food is one of the quieter, daily pleasures of retiring in Chiang Mai.
Lanna Cuisine
Northern Thai food (Lanna cuisine) is milder and more herb-forward than the Thai food most Westerners know from central or southern menus. Chiang Mai staples like khao soi (curry noodle soup), sai oua (herbed sausage) and nam prik ong (tomato chili dip) reflect the region's mountain produce and its own culinary identity.
Seasonal Fruit Calendar
| Fruit | Typical Peak Season | Notes |

| Lychee | April – May | Grown at higher elevations around Chiang Mai |

Seasons are typical ranges and can shift year to year with weather and growing conditions.
A scouting trip is the best way to know whether the food, markets and pace of Chiang Mai suit you.
